Tennis etiquette for spectators
By Ms. Edwards-Onoro | September 14, 2008
Watching tennis matches is different than watching basketball or football. Tennis is a quieter sport, and spectators are expected to follow certain guidelines.
It doesn’t mean you can’t recognize great play – it’s just done in a different manner, and with different timing, than other sports. Here are some guidelines to remember:
- Use your “inside voice” when watching matches
- Don’t cheer, shout encouragement, or applaud during a point or serve
- Applaud either player when they make a great shot, after the point is over
- Applaud players after a long rally, after the point is over
- Do not coach, nor give advice on what stroke or serve to use
- Do not make line calls
- Do not applaud errors (balls hit into the net, bad serves)
- Enjoy the match!
